sonic matter. The work was recorded and edited

[Tokyo Soundscape Research] 2009
image: omm
In 2009 I spent time at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music researching
soundscapes. My work was divided into two parts. I first investigated IPOD
technology and its use as tool for mediating the experiences of everyday life
through a seamless flow of sound. This was inspired by the work of Michael
Bull and his seminal text on IPOD culture 'Sound Moves' (2007). As an artist
I was interested in the potential for a new kind of interactive IPOD sound-
art expression. I briefly outlined some of these ideas in a text entitled
'The Private Soundscape' which can be downloaded here (PDF).
The second part of the research program was inspired by soundscape expert
Keiko Torigoe, and the use of soundscape studies as a tool for community art
and development. I centred my project around the conceps of sound memories
and the imagination of sound, and how these interact to produce meaning and
narrative. The work was later presented as a radio sound installation /
sound diary exhibited at the universities annual ART-PASS event. A text
describing the project in full can be downloaded here (PDF).
[Tokyo Dialogues] 2009 / a collaborative chat with Sebastian Löwe
Tokyo Dialogues is a sound work of field recordings set under a spoken
dialogue. The dialogue supports and frames the various audio recordings,
while also providing a commentary on the cities sonic structure through an
exchange of ideas, personal experiences and convictions. The piece can be
downloaded and listened to here.Total length: 23:18
